  • Overview

    Assists Skilled Craft Workers A by performing duties, using proper tool care, to fabricate, construct, erect, install and repair products that are comprised primarily of wood and plastics. The performance of this work shall be in accordance with the following essential duties and responsibilities.


    The following duties are typical for this classification. However, any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties which may be performed.
    - Assists Skilled Craft Workers A as directed and by following work orders and schedules.
    - Performs basic interpretation of blueprints, sketches, work orders, or production sheets for information pertaining to the type of material and dimensional requirements of the product to be manufactured.
    - Uses basic materials and wood working techniques.
    - Performs closely supervised material takeoffs.
    - Inspects and selects specified wood species and color, as well as other necessary materials. Refers questions to Skilled Craft Worker A.
    - Prepares basic layout sketches as required. Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials.
    - Shapes materials to prescribed measurements and/or configurations, inclusive of mitered or otherwise shaped interlocking components of cabinets, doors, drawers, etc.
    - Sets up and operates all necessary power woodworking equipment including, but not limited to, saws, planers, routers, shapers, molders and sanding equipment as well as all associated hand tools. Performs safety inspections on required equipment.
    - Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, screws, dowels, biscuits and/or glue as required for strength, dimensional stability and aesthetics.
    - Verifies dimensions, installations and fit checks using tapes, rules, calipers, squares, levels, calculator, etc.
    - Fits and installs fabricated products in conformance with good workmanship standards, company guidelines and customer requirements.
    - Maintains work area, equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly condition.
    - Assures quality of work through accuracy, neatness, paying attention to details, thorough understanding of information, with minimal amount of rework. Conveys personal commitment to quality by demonstrating good quality behavior. Identifies and acts upon opportunities to improve quality of material or process.
    - Reports any problems or difficulties to Skilled Craft Worker A or Wood Shop Superintendent.
    - Ensures conformance to all aspects of the ISO 14001 standard and Construction Specialties’ Environmental Management System (EMS), including its environmental policy while performing job functions that may have a significant impact on the environment.

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and eighteen 18 or more months related experience or a combination of related experience, training, and education.
    Ability to read and interpret documents, such as blueprints, drawings, work order, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read and write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak clearly and effectively before groups of employees or customers.
    Ability to calculate figures and amounts, such as, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply geometric equations and formulas. Mathematically compute using fractions and decimals as well as degrees of an angle.
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule or chart form.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, manipulate or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; sit; talk and hear. The employee may occasionally be required to climb and balance.
    The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and sharp cutting edges. Exposure to these potential hazards may sometimes be in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee may also be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, dust, airborne particles, toxic and/or flammable solvents and chemicals. The risk of electrical shock and vibration may likewise occasionally be present.
    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be loud at times.
